About

Tom is a respiratory and sleep specialist at Breathe SA, North Adelaide. He also conducts world-class research into sleep and breathing at the Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health, Flinders University, and is a staff specialist and lead researcher at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Respiratory Unit.

He manages all conditions related to respiratory or sleep medicine, and has specific expertise in:

  • shortness of breath

  • smoking-related lung diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

  • obstructive sleep apnea

  • narcolepsy and other causes of sleepiness

  • complex sleep disorders

Tom trained at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, then moved to Sydney for further specialist training in sleep disorders at the Woolcock Institute for Medical Research and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Tom’s research is at the cutting-edge of what happens to breathing during sleep. He strongly believes that the best medical care is delivered when doctors are involved in the latest research. His PhD focussed on:

  • the links between sleep and shortness of breath in the daytime

  • new drug treatments for sleep apnea

  • the effects of medications on breathing during sleep

He has published several research papers on sleep and breathing, and frequently presents his research at international conferences. He also supervises PhD and Masters research students.

He has been awarded prizes for research excellence from the World Sleep Society, the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, and the Australasian Sleep Association. In 2023 he was awarded the New Investigator Award at the World Sleep Conference in Rio de Janeiro for his PhD research. He has been awarded over $4 million in research grant funds.
